Astypalaia: Where to Stay and Top 3 Things To Do

Discover the island I call ‘Santorini without the crowds’. Astypalaia: Where to Stay and the Top 3 Things to Do

Introduction

These are top 3 best things to do in Astypalaia, Greece, including the best place to stay on the island! While Santorini is overrun by tourists, Astypalaia is an island that is not yet discovered by the big crowds. Even though Astypalaia offers similar views as Santorini with its stunning white ‘Hora’ on top of a hill with cliffs high above the sea below. Of course it is not near as developed, but that is also the beauty of it. In case you are thinking of going, be aware of the fact that before June and after September, not much will be open. The season is short and not many people live on this island all year round making it not much a vibe out of season. There is an airport though so you can fly right in. I advise on a short visit of 3-5 days at for instance the end of June. And in case you’re planning it, here’s how to make the most of it!

Where to Stay in Astypalaia: Kallichoron Art Boutique Hotel, the best hotel on the island

Your Astypalaia experience should definitely begin at the Kallichoron Art Boutique Hotel. This isn’t just a place to rest your head; it’s an experience in itself. Known all over Greece for its sumptuous breakfast, you’ll start your day with a feast of local delicacies. And as you eat, the panoramic views of Astypalaia Chora will leave you breahtless. It’s the perfect blend of luxury and local charm, as the hospitality is also a 10/10. It was one of my Greece bucket list hotels and it did not disappoint!

1. Exploring Astypalaia Chora

Number one on the list and probably what you came to Astypalaia for is Astypalaia Chora, with its whitewashed buildings and winding streets. Start at the iconic Querini Castle, a Venetian fortress that offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Wander through the narrow alleys and discover hidden gems around the back of Chora like the Panagia Portaitissa Church. In summer, there are some nice bars and cafes with a view open in Chora, such as Castro Bar, where you can sit underneath the stars all night. Otherwise the tavernas on the foot of the Chora hill (on the promenade next to the windmills) are always open to welcome you for a bite or a drink,

2. Road Trip to the East Side of Astypalaia

The beauty of Astypalaia lies in its diverse landscapes. Head to the east side of the island for a scenic drive that promises views straight out of a postcard. Your first stop? Maltezana Beach. It is organized in the summer with many accommodation options as well, and it’s the perfect spot for a refreshing swim. Once you’ve had your fill of the beach, continue to the authentic Galini Taverna in Exo Vathi. Living legend and well known Astypalaian Maria runs this place after taking it over from her mother, grandma Stavroula. At first, you think you are entering someones house instead of a taverna. It feels like the end of the world even, as the last part is a dirt road. Anyway, don’t be fooled! Maria cooks the most delicious fresh food (including fish) and the view over the bay of Vathy with blue waters is just amazing. You MUST go here if you like authentic, cause it does not get more authentic than this in Astypalaia.

3. Day Cruise with Avra Cruises to the bluest ever waters at Kounoupi and Koutsomiti

No visit to Astypalaia is complete without exploring its surrounding waters. Cause they are simply STUNNING. Book a day cruise with Avra Cruises to Konoupi and Koutsomiti. These islands, with their crystal-clear waters and untouched beauty, are a haven for those seeking tranquility. Dive in for a swim, explore the hidden coves, or simply relax on the deck – the choice is yours.
